Should we grade student participation?

I’m posting this link in lieu of this week’s teaching tip, since I’m down in Richmond learning to create online seminars. I’m really hoping you all will share your opinions and practices on student participation.

  1. Grading participation is just like any other item in a course. How you grade the item has to be directly tied to the course objectives. Grading the number of posts is irrelevant unless there is some direct link to course objectives. For example, “Use effective written communication to express ..blah..blah..blah” is a common objective for may content areas. In that case, student responses to the discussion room have more meaning.
